Split Lunches

Strangely enough, this trimester has been my first experience with a split lunch. I've always had the first or last lunch, so class was never interrupted. Experiencing "C" lunch now, I'm not sure that I'm a fan. Technically, the amount of class time is the same no matter which lunch you have. But the way I approach class is different. While the largest chunk of class time occurs before lunch, I find that the last 30 minutes or so of class that we have after lunch are largely useless for me. Especially with work days, I find this small amount of time useless. It's too much work to get back into the zone, log in, and re-start the academic thought processes for what little time remains. For example, today after lunch I didn't type any more of my ethnography, and I know many others didn't as well. Despite the same amount of total class time, does anybody else feel that when lunch is during fourth hour can really affect the productivity of the class?

  1. I am in total agreement. I can't think quite as well in those last 20 minutes. For some, the academic thought process is terminated as soon as they look at the clock for lunch. B lunch would even have been better, since we would spend most of the period with a full stomach and focus better without hunger.

  2. I think that A lunch is overall the best option.

Firstly, it tames your hunger early. Secondly, there is no interruption.

I agree with you, Jackie. The split lunch system makes the first half/second half of class mostly useless for those in B/C lunch. Although it is the only way for the school to organize lunches, it isn't a very good system (Speaking of bad systems, what do you think about the new lunch room design? Lol). I think that there are many things our school doesn't do quite the best in terms of lunch, but with 2800 students, it is probably pretty darn hard.

Ya gotta give 'em some credit though.

P.S. Jackie, you're pretty lucky. This being your first time having B/C lunch.

  3. I realize there really is no other logical way to organize lunches, and I don't mean to hate on CP. I'm just shocked at what a difference it can really make on the productivity of class time.

  4. I know what you mean. Not to single anyone out, but I have noticed how after lunch almost everyone comes back late and then hangs around the room chatting. It takes a good ten minutes after lunch to get productive again. Maybe they could just build another lunch room? :P Of course not though, too much money..
